Interview with David and Robert
What drives you?
You want to know who’s behind Propain? The two managing directors David and Robert give you a look behind the scenes and tell you what drives them every day.
David, Robert – for both of you, since its inception, Propain Bikes was a true aff air of the heart. So, for how long you guys are riding bikes?
David: I started riding bikes aged 3 1/2 and have been riding professionally since I was 14 years old.
Robert: I´m a mountain biker for 20 years now, of which I was a racer for fi ve years. Initially as a XC hobby racer, later on as an amateur downhiller.
After all these years, what is it that still excites you about mountain biking?
David: Die selbst erzeugte Geschwindigkeit! Und dann natürlich, sich auf dem Bike fortzubewegen und dabei, trotz aller Anstrengung, immer entspannter anzukommen als man losgefahren ist.
Robert: What still fascinates me about biking is that it actually always gives me what I currently have in mind – the sport is so varied. No matter if downhill action, flowing trails, nature experience, meeting friends: Biking links everything!
Your most exciting experience on a bike?
Robert: That for sure, was the bear that crossed the trail between myself and my buddy, when we had a run down A-Line with about 40 km/h and a gap of ten metres between us. I thought that to be really funny, since I was in front (laughs). – he almost crashed into that bear.
David: I experienced a lot of crazy stuff riding my bike, but nothing comes close to this!
How many working hours went into the fi rst-ever Propain Rage, what was your focus during development?
Robert: Developing the first Rage, which I designed in my tidy student apartment, took me about three months. After one year of intense prototype testing, the Rage hit the market. I focused on developing a bike with an outstanding feature, setting us apart from our competition. This exactly is now a proven design and is featured on Propain´s complete line-up: the Pro10 suspension system.
…usually, we have the best ideas when we ride our bikes. If we don´t like something, we change it. But even if a product already offers high-performance, we aim to improve it until it´s perfect!
Is there any certain professional background that inspired you to found Propain bikes, back then?
David: No, my motivation was more of private nature. Before we started with Propain, I realised that the guys buying the awesome bikes often understand about mountain bikes better than bicycle retailers. So, the idea was born: creating a bike brand that directly communicates with its customers, which we did with Propain bikes.
Robert: During my mechanical engineering studies, I wanted to make use of my knowledge learnt and developed a downhill bike matching my ideas and wishes. Thereof, we constructed the fi rst ever Rage frame and the „Pro10“ suspension system, eventually Propain.
What make Propain special compared to other bike brands?
David: Every Propain staff member is a passionate mountain biker and you can feel that in our product and the commitment for our customers and their requests.
Modern bikes already are very refi ned. How do you manage to better them, nevertheless?
Robert: Usually, we have the best ideas when riding our bikes. If we don´t like something, we change it. But even if a product already off ers high-performance, we aim to even improve its design. Until it´s perfect!
