THE ALL NEW HUGENE

Tour, Trail, Allmountain? What now? The new Hugene has the answer. A bike that always rocks with a suspension travel of 140-150 mm. Whether it's a fast trail ride, a day trip or an Alpine cross. With the Hugene you can climb the summit and go crazy downhill. One bike to rule them all!

We continue to use carbon and 29" wheels. We have addressed the criticisms of the previous Hugene and so our new trail rocket now has a slightly steeper seat angle, a flatter steering angle and a longer reach. The suspension travel has increased by 10mm and the chainstay remains at a moderate length of 445mm. As with our other new models, the shock absorber is placed in front of the seat tube. For this purpose, we have properly optimized our proven PRO10 suspension system. The result is an even better balance of smoothness and agility to give the trail rider security and stability without appearing sluggish.

The new Hugene is even lighter and snappier, with particular attention paid to drive efficiency. With 110% Anti-Squat, nothing can disturb the rear end on uphills. This means the bike climbs like a hardtail, but also offers you solid downhill performance. The kinematics have been optimized so that the shock absorber hardens progressively and offers sensitivity while at the same time offering high bottom-out protection.

It climbs, it jibs, it shreds, it's huge – huge on trails!

Overall Concept and Geometry

With the combination of a flat steering angle of 65.5°, a steep seat angle of 76.5° (effective) and the floating shock absorber, which is centrally located in the bike, we achieve exactly this: comfortable pedaling uphill with plenty of pressure on the front wheel, but also optimal weight distribution downhill. A feature that you notice when you first get on the bike and never want to miss again. What is remarkable is that this change in geometry has significantly improved both the uphill and downhill characteristics. A reach of 480 mm with a chainstay length of 445 mm in size L makes the new Hugene smoother and more agile than before and creates real balance.

Suspension system / kinematics

The PRO10 system is known for its drive neutrality. With the optimized suspension system we can top this again. Compared to its predecessor, the anti-squat has been increased from 100% to 110%. The system still retains its sensitive response and starts working on even the smallest bumps. The progression of the rear triangle has also been optimized compared to the previous model. The design of the rear triangle offers optimal traction at every opportunity.

Wheel concept

Comfort! Grip! Smooth running! We continue to use 29" wheels for our trail bike. The advantages are obvious. The larger wheels ensure better rollover behavior, so bumps in the terrain are mastered more quickly than with smaller wheels. The larger contact area of the 29" tires also improves traction, which means more grip. The longer wheelbase makes the bike smoother, and the larger wheels store more energy in the wheels while you ride, which keeps you at speed for longer. And that's exactly what we want to achieve with our trail bike: speed, smooth running and comfort both uphill and downhill.

New design concept

As with our other models, we are also breaking new ground in terms of design. The modern design of the Hugene appears elegant, clean and dynamic at the same time. When processing the carbon, we make use of the versatility of the material. The upper linkage is now also made of carbon and painted in the frame color. Many visible edges and flowing shapes characterize the image. With attention to detail, a design was created that is tidy, elegant and puristic. In addition to new frame colors, the customer now also has the option of configuring the head tube badge. As usual, the bike can also be further customized from the large selection of decals to suit every taste.

Uphill

Lively uphill with the new Hugene. The steeper seat angle, the flatter steering angle and the 29" wheels mean that you have plenty of pressure on the pedals and plenty of propulsion and traction even on the steepest climbs and technical uphills. The high anti-squat value keeps the PRO10 rear triangle taut and you don't experience any energy loss. The stiff frame made of full carbon conveys lightness and agility. The new Hugene only wants one thing: to go forward!

Colors and decals

The new main frame colors of the Hugene are "Safari (matte)" and "Petrol Dark (gloss)." The third color, "Carbon Raw (gloss)," is already familiar from the Tyee and Spindrift. A visible coating conveys the unique look, revealing the special processing of the "Blend Carbon" frame.

Frame Features

Blend Carbon

For us, carbon is not just carbon. Instead, we use different carbon materials and their diverse properties to meet the respective requirements. PROPAIN carbon frames are made from pre-impregnated (prepreg) carbon layers. Each one has special properties and a corresponding task at a specific point on the frame. Different fibers and fabrics are used based on the requirements for stiffness, flexibility, weight, strength and the direction of tension. PROPAIN only uses the highest quality materials. For example, our frames use carbon fibers that are also used in the latest generation of aircraft parts.

Internal train routing

Internal cable routing is now pretty much standard on modern bikes. It is the cleanest, safest and, above all, the most attractive way to route cables. We are taking it to a new level by equipping the carbon frames with internal cable channels through which the cables run. This makes cable routing super easy and eliminates noise in the frame. On the new Hugene, the cables run above the bottom bracket.

New additions include selectable headtube badges in three different colors: “Venomblack Matt”, “Diamondblack Gloss” and “Chrome Gloss”.

PROPAIN Dirt-Shields and Acros Bearings
Two is better than one! The robust Acros frame bearings are additionally protected by the PROPAIN dirt shields. An extra seal protects the bearings underneath from dust, water and dirt.

PROPAIN ISCG recording
The mount for the chain guide was specially developed by us. This offers double protection for the frame because it is not screwed on, but rather clipped onto the frame. In the event of a hard impact from below, the bash guard absorbs the energy and transfers it to the frame over a large area. This protects the frame from damage. If necessary, the mount can be easily replaced.

Frame Protection
PROPAIN places great value on providing the frame with optimum protection right from the factory. A newly developed down tube and chain stay protector is used, which can be easily replaced. Various materials absorb the vibrations of the chain, preventing noise and the chain from rocking.

Damper freedom
We have further improved the shock clearance to make room for operating all lockout and adjustment levers. The most common air shocks are compatible, but we have deliberately not focused on coil or DH-specific products.

Bottle holder
The new Hugene frame has two mounts for a water bottle holder. A bottle holder and a mount for straps/tools/pump can be attached to the top and down tubes.

Our opinion:

Facilities and prices

When selecting components, we continue to rely on a large and high-quality variety from which everyone can configure their dream bike. In addition to the new RockShox Pike Ultimate and the Fox34 Float FIT4 Factory with 140 mm, we also offer the new Fox36 in orange with 150 mm in our configurator. The electronic SRAM AXS gear group and longer seat posts with up to 185 mm travel from Bikeyoke and Fox round off the package.

The configuration options are further expanded by various handlebar rise options and stem lengths. In addition to the individual configuration, we also offer three fixed equipment packages (Start, Performance, Highend), which are intended to simplify the assembly of the bike for the customer and represent a recommendation.

The starter version starts at a price of 3,399.00 EUR. The performance package is 4,549.00 EUR. The high-end version is available from a price of 7,129.00 EUR Available in our webshop from February 2nd, 2021. Prices outside Europe may vary.

Weight

One of the most important points in the development of the Hugene was to reduce the frame weight.
To achieve this, we implemented three things:

  • We have optimized the frame structure to have straighter tubes with fewer bends to ensure that the tubes are not subjected to unnecessary stress.
  • We have optimized the carbon layup. We continue to use our blend carbon material, but with a higher proportion of extremely tensile fibers with a high modulus of elasticity.
  • We also made the upper linkage out of carbon, which saves a few additional grams.

As a result, we use fewer layers of carbon while maintaining the same high frame stiffness. Overall, we were able to reduce the frame weight by 300 grams to 2.3 kg.

  • Frame weight: 2.3 kg (size S)
  • Total weight: 12.9 kg (in size L, high-end equipment)

Development

During development, our frames undergo extensive testing on our in-house test bench. They are tested for stiffness, overload and fatigue in load tests with a total of over 500,000 cycles per frame. We test all frames far beyond the prescribed standards, so our enduro bikes are listed in category 5 and our trail bikes in category 4.
